YEAR-END REVIEW - Superstars make 2005 their own year

While Park (Chan-wook) outpaced other directors in terms of commercial success and critical acclaim, actor Hwang Jung-min has enjoyed the best time of acting career this year. Hwang starred in five movies this year including romances "You're My Sunshine" and "All for Love."

Hwang won the Best Actor award at the Blue Dragon Awards for his passionate role in "You're My Sunshine." He was also nominated for supporting actor categories in other awards for his role in "A Bittersweet Life." Even though his fame skyrocketed this year, proving his talent as a versatile actor, Hwang argued that he's just a "simple actor," leaving a greater impression on his fans and critics.

Hwang debuted in 2001 with a role for "Waikiki Brothers," and has starred in a total of 10 movies playing various roles. He was a kind man in "YMCA Baseball Team," and then turned into a homeless man in "Road Movie" before changing his image into a not-that-kind lawyer in "A Good Lawyer's Wife." He also postured as a gangster in "A Bittersweet Life."

Hwang had sharpened his acting skills on the drama stage for several years before jumping into the silver screen. So his acting is said to be more solid and refined compared with other movie stars. For "You're My Sunshine" which is based on a true story of a man who fell in love with a woman who later discovered she was infected with HIV, Hwang gained 15 kilograms and then lost 7 kilograms in 10 days in order to portray the character's grief and sorrow realistically.

Kim Min-seo (김민서) (born March 16, 1984) is a South Korean actress. She graduated from Dankook University (majored in theater and film). She almost became in idol when she debuted as Kim Se-ha in the short-lived K-pop three-member girl group Mint, which was active in 1999-2000. When Mint disbanded, she turned to acting. Kim is best known for her role as a the sad, wispy dead girl in Bad Guy; the mysterious and charismatic gisaeng, Chosun, in Sungkyunkwan Scandal; the sophisticated, haughty designer in Baby-Faced Beauty; and now as the jealous queen, the villainous Yoon Bo-kyung, in the period drama The Moon that Embraces the Sun. With her acting getting noticed and her ability to look at home in whatever part she’s playing, she is being recognized as something of a chameleon.

Seriously, I don't really know that much about Song Kang Ho and quite afraid that I won't be able to give justice to this thread with very limited (personal) resources & input but.. but.. the soompi Kdramas & movies forum without a thread on this awesome actor.. is .. uhh.. just .. NOT RIGHT not right at all. image

First saw him in JSA (Joint Security Area).. simply awesome! Initially watching for LBH but seeing this 'other actor' playing the North Korean sargeant.. you just knew.. he's one incredible thespian. It's really cool learning more about this actor, who so deservingly won so many awards in the recent years especially in 2007.. they might have to create a second Best Actor award if SKH is in the list as well. image

Later he joined Kee Kuk-seo's influential theatre company with its emphasis on instinctive acting and improvisation which proved Song's training ground. Although regularly approached to act in films, he always turned down the opportunity until taking a role as an extra in Hong Sang-soo's The Day a Pig Fell into the Well (1996).

In the following year, after portraying one of the homeless in Jang Sun-woo's docu-style Bad Movie, he gained cult notoriety for his show-stealing performance in Song Neung-han's No. 3 as a gangster training a group of young recruits, winning his first Best Actor award. Since that time he's been cast in several supporting roles before before his high-profile appearance as Han Suk-kyu's secret agent partner in Kang Jae-gyu's blockbuster thriller Shiri.

In early 2000, Song became a star with his first leading role in the box office smash The Foul King, for which he reputedly did most of his own stunts. But it is with his award-winning role as a North Korean sergeant in Joint Security Area that Song came to the forefront as one of Korea's leading actors. Song also starred in Park Chan-wook's acclaimed followup, Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, which centers around a father's pursuit of his daughter's kidnappers.

In 2002 Song starred in another major production by Myung Films, YMCA Baseball Team, about Korea's first baseball team which formed in the early 20th century. The following year he played a leading role in yet another critically-acclaimed smash hit, Memories of Murder from young director Bong Joon-ho. In 2004 Song starred in a film by debut director Im Chan-sang that imagines the life of South Korean president Park Chung-hee's personal barber. The following year he also took the lead in Antarctic Journal, a big-budget project by debut director Im Phil-sung, about an expedition in Antarctica that performed weakly at the box-office.

In 2006 Song was thrust back in the spotlight, however, with a leading role in Bong Joon-ho's record-breaking creature movie The Host. The film helped to broaden international awareness of Song's talent, and indeed he beat out several of Asia's best known stars to be named Best Actor at the inaugural Asian Film Awards held in Hong Kong in March 2007.
Upcoming projects for Song include a gangster film from the director of Rules of Dating, Secret Sunshine, the next feature by the acclaimed Lee Chang-dong, and a Western set in Manchuria by Kim Jee-woon.
