Park Chan-wook stalks a thriller with ‘Stoker’
By Rachel Lee [estyle@joongang.co.kr]

LOS ANGELES - Acclaimed director Park Chan-wook, who is renowned for daring films such as “Oldboy” (2003), “Sympathy for Lady Vengeance” (2005) and “Thirst” (2009) recently wrapped production on his English-language film debut, a thriller called “Stoker.”

28212417.jpg

The film, which stars Nicole Kidman, Mia Wasikowska and Matthew Goode, is slated for release later this year and there is already talk of a possible Cannes premiere.

The JoongAng Ilbo met with Park in Los Angeles, where he was in the middle of post-production for the film. This is the first time he has discussed the film with the Korean media.

Q. What is the plot of “Stoker”?

A. The story revolves around a father, mother and adolescent daughter who live in an isolated house in a suburb. But all is not well in the family and there is friction between the mother and daughter. One day, the father dies suddenly in a car accident, and the story starts when an estranged uncle shows up at the father’s funeral. While staying with the family, the uncle becomes involved in a love triangle with both the mother and daughter.

The screenplay for “Stoker” was on the 2010 Black List Top Ten, which lists the best unproduced screenplays in Hollywood. Why did you choose it over other screenplays?

I’d reviewed a lot of screenplays, especially a lot of the revenge films. But I limited my selections to Westerns, sci-fi films, psychological thrillers and spy movies. “Stoker” attracted my attention because it only has three main characters and the whole story unfolds in a house, which is a very confined space. I like telling big stories through small, artificially created worlds. Also, there was less pressure on me because the scale of the film isn’t that big. Besides, I thought it wouldn’t be bad to make my English-language debut with a scenario influenced by Alfred Hitchcock, because it was Hitchcock’s film “Vertigo” [1958] that made me decide to become a director.

Matthew Goode said in an interview that you speak English well but always spoke through an interpreter on set. Why didn’t you speak to everyone directly?

I was fortunate enough to meet an interpreter who was able to perfectly transmit ideas between myself and the cast and crew. Even the actors in the film have mentioned the interpreter, Jung Won-jo, by name in interviews.

Which actors or actresses would you like to work with in the future?

I’m really interested in working with Gary Oldman, who is in “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy.” Also, the Iranian actors and actresses in the film “A Separation” drew my attention because of their perfect acting.

You’d considered doing a remake of “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy.” Why didn’t you?

I really loved the film and saw it twice in the theater. But it’s because I loved it so much that I decided not to do it. I wasn’t confident about my ability to adapt it without damaging the original and was concerned about how to satisfy both people who watched the original and those who didn’t.

on March 5. When setting up the appointment, he said that he didn’t want
to pose for a picture. But he changed his mind on the day of the meeting
and posed for a moment. By Kim Sang-jin

People have certain expectations for “Stoker” based on your previous films. For example, people are expecting elements of cruelty, destruction and revenge because those have been themes in your previous films. People have also wondered whether you have an aversion to religion. How would you respond to that?

Those are natural expectations for people to have, considering my previous films. I think that revenge, which is usually an element in my films, is essential for various kinds of films, whether they be thrillers, mysteries or films with violence. But I’m not a violent or angry person like the people in my films are and those are emotions I’m actually afraid to express. Maybe that’s why I often deal with those subjects in my films.

Regarding the second point, I used to be Catholic, but now I’m not. I don’t have a particular religion, but I don’t have any hostility toward any religion and I actually respect religious people such as Johann Sebastian Bach, the famous German composer who was also a devout Christian.

What is the difference between working in Korea and working in Hollywood?

The production process in Hollywood is much faster, but I think there are both pros and cons to it.

Actors here don’t check the monitor unless told to do so by the director, unlike Korean actors, who are sensitive about how they look on screen. Even after the director says “cut,” they stay in character and wait for the next take.

Also, there was no editing in the field, compared to what happens in Korea, where there are many discussions in the field with repeated viewings of what was just filmed. I actually prefer having those discussions, but there is nothing like that here.

But there are good things about working in Hollywood - the process is effective and the director’s opinion is easily accepted.

What made the biggest impression on you while you were working here in Hollywood and what did you learn?

I was impressed that there are so many good stories and screenplays here. It also seems like many kinds of movies could be shot here, such as films dealing with race, which is hard to imagine doing in Korea.

What I learned here is that I need to speed up the production process. In fact, I often worried that filming was taking too long. I finished shooting “Stoker” in only 480 hours, compared with the more than 90 days it took to shoot my last film, “Thirst.” But, of course, the scale of “Thirst” was much larger than “Stoker.”

What are some of the good things about the Korean production system?

I realized that our assistant directors and production departments are more valuable than I’d thought, but I missed our assistant directors the most.

The assistant director here once scared me a bit when he told me I’d have to give up some scenes if I didn’t finish a shot in 15 minutes.

Cinematographer Chung Chung-hoon must have been a great help to you.

He was. I appreciated his presence on the several trips I made here with him. He was great at overseeing several departments, such as lighting and set decoration, even though it was his first time working in Hollywood and he doesn’t speak much English. I was surprised at his ability to solve almost any problem with just 10 words. He was also popular on set and even got shoulder rubs from Nicole Kidman.

While you were working on this film, did your opinion about the status of Korean film change - and if so, how? And how does it compare with other cultural exports such as K-pop or dramas?

Actually, most of the American public dislikes reading subtitles, except for movie buffs. But people in the industry in Hollywood are familiar with Korean film and they know all the names of the famous Korean directors and the titles of their works. In the global film industry, Korean film is certainly a rising power. I’m not certain about dramas and music, but film has continued to attract attention.

From where do you think Korean film gets its power?

I think it comes from the fact that Korean films aren’t telling the same old stories. Also, the characters are written very well, to show emotions that are appropriate to their circumstances and how those emotions change in extreme situations. In addition, Korean films keep audiences from dozing off because they are true to the characteristics of each genre.

How do you maintain a balance between cinematic quality and the impulse to create a box office hit?

When I’m writing a screenplay, I only think about quality. If investors decide to support the film, then it’s probably going to achieve some degree of recognition. But if the screenplay is rejected by investors, I just start another work.

You always emphasize the importance of individuality. Where does your own sense of individuality come from?

It’s more important to me to do something unusual than to do something new. I don’t approach anything with the idea of making it new or unique, but I try not to follow what others are doing. When I’m shooting a very normal scene, I don’t try to invent a creative angle or camera movement, but I try to avoid falling into the same old patterns. That’s the most important thing for my individuality.

What things have you read that have helped you create your films?

I’ve been affected by all kinds of novels - mostly Eastern and Western detective stories including pure mysteries, sci-fi and hard-boiled detective fiction. I’ve also been influenced by other types of fiction and plays.

What’s next for you? Will you continue to work in Hollywood?

I was planning to make another film, “The Axe,” before I started shooting “Stoker.” But while I was still seeking investors for that film, I received the screenplay for “Stoker.” So “The Axe” will be my next work, though I need to do some more work on the casting and attracting investors. I’m also thinking about making a historical film, but I’m not sure when I’ll be able to do that.

Regarding your other question, I’d like to continue working in both Hollywood and Korea. Actually, it doesn’t matter to me where a film is made. If the story is good, I’ll follow it.

What’s most important to you in life?

My film “I’m a Cyborg, But That’s OK,” is very special to me because it shows what I’ve learned in my life. The main character, Park Il-soon [Jung Ji-hoon], puts it best in one scene when he says: “Give up hope and cheer up!” Through him, I was trying to say that we should think realistically without delusions that are based on the lies other people tell us. But it never says that we should be depressed or suicidal. The important thing is to cheer up.

The most important message in the movie is that at least we have to eat. My answer to your question is also the same - don’t forget to eat.

[koreanfilm.org] Cha Seung-won (b. June 7, 1970) received an engineering degree from Mokwon University before embarking on a career as a model in 1988. After finding success in modeling, he was cast in the TV sitcom "New York Story", which would eventually pave the way for his debut in film.

Although his debut film Holiday in Seoul (1997) and many of the films to follow did not establish him as a major star, in 2000 he would score a significant hit playing the villain in firefighting film Libera Me. The following summer, the runaway success of Kim Sang-jin's comedy Kick the Moon (over 4.3 million tickets sold) secured his place in the industry as a leading actor with strong star appeal. All of his films since then have been successes at the box-office.

In early 2003, Cha took on a slightly more serious role as a corrupt schoolteacher who is transferred to a country school in the film My Teacher, Mr. Kim. The film grossed over 2.4 million admissions and drew Cha additional praise for his acting abilities. His next role then re-united him with director Kim Sang-jin in a successful comedy {Ghost House} about a man who buys a dream home, only to discover it is haunted by a young female ghost.

In 2005 Cha put aside the comic roles he had become known for and appeared in the grisly period-set thriller Blood Rain. The film's better than expected commercial success confirmed Cha's popularity among Korean audiences. In late 2005 Cha will appear for the first time in a film {The Big Scene (also known as Murder, Take One)} by reknowned comedy director Jang Jin.

Extracted from Mr. X's SEP-11-2005 review of 2005 movie "Blood Rain"
Cha Seung-Won ironically said, in an interview after the screening of the film: “I finally graduated from middle school. Now the real studying begins.” He’s got a point. While Koreans have elected him as one of the few bonafide box office draws, it was a long and painful process for him. Starting with modeling in the late 80s, getting a few decent roles in TV Dramas, finally debuting on the big screen, with only one-dimensional characters which did little to further his career. Then came ’리베라 메 (‘Libera Me’), not exactly a great film, but his performance there raised more than a few eyebrows. Do we have a good actors on our hands? It wasn’t until Cha met and started working with Kim Sang-Jin and writer Park Jung-Woo that his potential got fulfilled. Several surefire comedy hits followed, establishing him as the (male) King of Comedy. Women loved him because he showed warmth, he was masculine without unnecessary machismo, and had a great sense of humour; men respected him because he was like the older friend next door, who acted tough but was always great fun to deal with. But the moment you realize people really like your work, something changes. You stop thinking about the quick bucks, and start worrying about your future. For how long could he continue to do comedies? Until people got tired of him? Then that positive greed and hunger to become a better actor comes out. One could safely say ‘Blood Rain’ is the turning point of Cha’s career. Assuredly stoic and stubborn in the first part, slowly allowing his conscience to get the better of his rationality in the second, Cha gives what could be considered his best performance to date. Charisma and ability to deliver ad-lib aside, this role required a lot of focus: he couldn’t explode with his screen presence, because Won-Gyu’s tongue is sharper than his physicality. For that reason alone, his efforts doubled, and although it’ll take time for him to adapt to his new ‘clothes,’ and maybe even more to be accepted by critics as a ‘serious’ actor, I think he’s got all the potential in the world to do that.

Kim Woo Bin as Park Heung Soo (19) - Held back transfer student; Legendary fighter; Class position unknown.
He's your hyung-nim fellow student. He's tall, buff and mean looking, but also old. He's moved from five school from KyungkI Do to Seoul
as if he's shopping for a school. He's tough, harsh, violent and fights well but he's also smart. However on the outside he acts and looks
distant
and uninterested. Rumor has it that he regarded as a legendary fighter who suppressed and kept the peace of the whole Kyungki Do.

From MisaPWNs:
I first saw Lee Jung Hyun in the K-Drama, Beautiful Days. I really enjoyed her acting as the role of Kim Sena.
Even though her character was meant to be annoying, I found her a lot more interesting than Kim Yon-Soo (Cho Ji Woo).

I didn't know she was a K-Pop star until I did research online.
I highly recommend her music and MVs. She has a really cool voice that stands out.

Lee Jung Hyun is pretty, cute and talented.

Hi everyone! Welcome to Jin Goo's!

I'm sure many have seen this actor who received a lot of praise portraying the young Kim In Ha in the drama, All In back in 2003. There hasn't been much on the actor but he's been in A Bittersweet Life, also with LBH since then and had recently came out in Jo In Sung's new movie A Dirty Carnival aka Mean Streets.

Though he has yet to be given a prominent leading role, hopefully this talented young actor will one day be starring in a drama series of his own, one that's totally deserving to showcase the intense performance he's truly capable of. Would appreciate everyone's input to update this thread and let's share everything about Jin Goo together!

user posted image user posted image 26 Years (2012)
Spoiler:
26 Years is a film with a dramatic story, and a dramatic production history. It is based on a webcomic by one of Korea's best-known comic artists Kang Full, who has seen many of his previous works adapted into feature films, including APT (2006), Ba:Bo (2008), Crush On You (2008), Late Blossom (2011), and this year's The Neighbor. But everyone knew that the adaptation of this particular webcomic would be more of a challenge, due to its controversial subject matter. The story is set in 2006, 26 years after troops sent in by Korea's military government brutally crushed a pro-democracy uprising in the southwestern city of Gwangju, resulting in thousands of deaths. The plot centers around five protagonists whose lives were upended by the massacre, and who come together in a secret plot to assassinate the man responsible. As a former president, he lives under police protection in an affluent district of Seoul, but through a combination of ingenuity, skill, and well-placed money they are able to draw within shooting distance of their target. Although he is not named explicitly in the film, the target of the assassination attempt is clearly meant to represent former President Chun Doo-hwan, who was convicted in 1996 of crimes related to the Gwangju Massacre, but later pardoned by President Kim Dae-jung. Due to this fact, the production of this film has stirred controversy, and indeed an original plan to produce this work under director Lee Hae-young (Like A Virgin) fell apart in 2008 when financing could not be secured. Only this year, after two rounds of crowd-funding drew donations from over 15,000 people was the film able to be completed. Shot by debut director Cho Geun-hyun, the film stars Jin Goo as a young gangster, Han Hye-jin as an Olympic sharpshooter, Lim Seul-ong as a newly recruited police officer, Bae Soo-bin as a lobbyist, and Lee Geung-young as a company chairman who all join together in this act of extralegal punishment. Jang Gwang, who plays a similarly menacing presence in Silenced, gives an impressive performance as "that man." Modified somewhat from the original, the film plays like a tense thriller in the second half, but for Korean audiences the work represents more than anything an effort to revisit the most tragic event in recent Korean history, and to once again raise questions related to punishment, national trauma, and closure.

Spoiler:
In 1994, a mysterious explosion occurs under the Balam Bridge in near Seoul. A passionate reporter, Lee Bang-woo (Hwang Jung-min), begins to investigate the truth of the incident. One day, Yoon Hyuk (Jin Goo) from the same town, shows up and presents several evidences that prove that the incident has been manipulated. Lee is teamed up with his colleagues, Jin-ki (Kim Sang-ho) and Hyo-kwan (Kim Min-hee), to find the truth of the incident, but their investigations are blocked by an unidentified men and blackmailed. As they get closer to the truth, an organization controlling the government is revealed. And Lee and his team come to face the imminent threat of the unidentified organization, nobody knows who controls them, or being controlled by whom, to save the society in trouble. While reporters have been a subject to criticize or mock in Korean films, this film takes reporters as protagonists. The production company, Palette Pictures, says that Mobidik is the first Korean film dealing with conspiracy theories. And they are expecting a success of this film due to recently emerging of conspiracy theory in the Korean society. Because the film is combined with a fierce brain battle with intense action scenes, a key for success depending on how persuasively the film delivers, reporters find the truth. The harmony of Hwang Jung-min, proved his ticket power and talent in The Unjust , and Jin Goo, delivered an impressive performance in Mother , is another attractive point. In addition, Kim Min-hee, famous as a fashion star rather than an actress, joins this star casting. The production company comments, “This film asks ‘do you believe in what you see is always true?’ and tries to catch a social content with a touch of witty.” Mobidik is Park In-jae’s directorial debut film and he won the grand prize at Mise-en-Scène Short Film Festival in 2003. It will be released in June 9, 2011, distributed by Showbox. As a middle sized film with a US$3.7 million (4 billion KRW), it will compete with Hollywood blockbuster movies during this summer season.

Spoiler:
The Showdown is set in 1615, where soldiers of Joseon are sent to China coerced by the Ming dynasty and fight for their lives. Hyeon-myeong, a Joseon general with a dangerous ambition (PARK Hee-soon, A Barefoot Dream), Do-yeong, son of a fallen noble family (JIN Goo, Mother), Du-su, a soldier who ran away from the field against orders (KOH Changseok, Secret Reunion) lead the story. Totally defeated in a fight with the Qing, they encounter each other at a tavern in Manchuria. As the Qing army continues to chase after them, they eventually become an unforgivable enemy to each other. Producer KIM Su-jin had explained when they were preparing this film that they had wanted to make this “as similar to a KUROSAWA or TARANTINO film as possible." The key to the plot is the ironical drama where "there is an enemy approaching from the outside while on the inside each of the three characters have their own reason to have be on guard against each other and there’s not knowing who will kill who." Hyeon-myeong and Do-yeong are from the noble class and become brothers during the battle. Yet soon they confront each other because of their varying ambitions and desire for power, and when Du-su who’s dragged to the army because he is poor, joins them the conflict only intensifies. The movie discusses their life stories, trauma, friendship, conspiracy, betrayal of friends during fight for power and enmity, and conflict of class.

Spoiler:
Kimchi Wars is about Seong-chan, a cooking genius and advocate of tradition, who must compete against Jang-eun to make the best kimchi dish. Jin Gu follows in the footsteps of Kim Kang-woo and Kim Rae-won, who played the lead in the first film and TV series, respectively. "I felt pressured because the previous works were hits and both actors received favorable reviews as Seong-chan. But my worries disappeared once I saw the script, because it features more dramatic elements, such as Seong-chan's dark past. And I think my image works as a plus in that regard," said the 29-year-old, who is known for playing strong, moody characters, most notably his critically acclaimed supporting role in Bong Joon-ho's "Mother." He added that the film was a great pleasure to make since cooking is a hobby of his, though emulating a professional chef meant undergoing "200 hours of chopping radishes" in order to perfect the motion. After the filming he was able to make kimchi with his mother, which proved to be a memorable experience.

cannes2b.th.jpg Mother (2009)
Spoiler:
Do-joon's Mother (Kim Hye Ja) lives with her son Do-joon (Won Bin) behind the murky shop where she sells medicinal plants and roots, and practices acupuncture without a license on the side. Do-joon is very good looking (he's played by Won Bin, after all), but he's not quite right in the head, rather like Song Gang-ho's character Gang-du in The Host, and like Gang-du, there is a hint that his impairment is his mother's fault. He's not retarded, but his dullness is difficult to define: he has no attention span to speak of and a poor memory; at twenty-seven he still sleeps with his mom, with a hand on her breast. He hangs around with Jin-tae (Jin Ku), who's also good-looking in a bad-boy way, and is a bad boy - a tough, cynical hustler who feels constrained by his small-town life and dreams of adventure. Jin Ku plays Jin-tae energetically, full of frustrated vitality, and by the end turns out to be a bit more sympathetic than you'd expect. koreanfilm.org

epitaph-small.jpg Epitaph (Gidam 2007)
Spoiler:
Epitaph, the debut film of the Jeong Brothers (Jeong Beom-sik and Jeong Sik -- "Jeong Brothers" is how they prefer to be listed in the credits), is a refined, intelligent and surprisingly effective Gothic horror. Well cast and acted, Epitaph is particularly notable for its close family resemblance to the slightly pale and artificial exquisiteness of certain Japanese genre films: it in fact can be favorably compared to the high-end Japanese adaptations of the willfully perverse but sparingly beautiful Edogawa Rampo mysteries (Tsukamoto Shinya's Gemini, Kawashima Toru's The Man Who Travels with Picture Relief). Epitaph has a convoluted (but currently fashionable) multiple flashbacks-and-time lag structure, but does not devolve into a confusing mess, which is a huge relief. The story is roughly divided into three segments. In the first, the young Jeong-nam/Masao (Jin Ku, who played Jo In-sung's young punk lieutenant in Dirty Carnival) finds himself attracted to a stunning-looking young girl's dead body, allegedly a victim of a failed double suicide.
